Wake Nation is the Cable of the future!

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Just returned from a beautiful weekend in Cincinnati with Henshaw, Melissa, Fooshee, and Aaron Reed. We were all in town for the Grand Opening of Wake Nation, the newest cable park to open in the US. Owners Pete and Nick went all out when building this park, as everything from the pro shop to demo room to rails/sliders were top notch! We spent three full days riding the rails and hanging with Cincy’s wake contigent. Radio Interviews and media day were a highlight, as the Grand Opening literally took the city by storm. Avoiding tornado’s and thunderstorms, we managed to premier Billabong’s new Out of the Pond to a delighted crowd and raffle off ton’s of LF prizes to the fans. The weekend was a blast and we can’t wait to head back! Big thanks to Pete and Nick for treating the entire LF squad like kings, you guys are the best!

Nordic Mountain will be first U.S. ski resort to install a System 2.0 cable wakeboarding park!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

May 29, 2009

Mt. Morris, WI – Nordic Mountain, a ski resort in Central Wisconsin, has recently announced its plans to install a wakeboard cable system scheduled to open in June of 2009. The cable system, a Sesitec System 2.0, will be the first of its kind set up in the Midwest, and only the seventh installed nationwide.
Cable parks have been popular in southern states such as Florida and Texas for years. Instead of being pulled by a boat, cable systems pull the rider using a system of overhead cables, which are connected to a tow handle that comes down to the water. Unlike a traditional cable system that goes in a circle around a lake, the System 2.0 is an innovative straight line cable with two towers. When the rider gets to either end of the System 2.0, he or she edges out as far as possible. As the rider’s momentum slows, the cable switches direction as the rider makes a half circle to seamlessly pull him or her back the opposite direction.
Nordic Mountain’s System 2.0 will be installed on their private, 1.5 acre snowmaking lake. The towers will be positioned roughly 400 feet apart. Powered by a 7.5 horsepower electric motor, the system is both quiet and environmentally friendly.
Nordic Mountain’s Wake Park will include floating features similar to those found in a snow terrain park. Normally not available to wakeboarders in the Midwest, these features will provide a unique challenge for intermediate and advanced riders. System 2.0 also allows riders to do aerial tricks by tensioning the cable system, also known as “loading the line.”
Not limited to advanced riders, the System 2.0 has proven itself as a great way to learn the sport. The upward pull of the cable makes learning a breeze and minimizes impact from falling. For those that don’t have their own equipment, helmet, vest, and board rentals will be available in various sizes to fit most anyone’s needs.
The System 2.0 made its U.S. debut at Surf Expo 2008 at the Red Bull Wake Lab in Orlando, Florida. Since that time it has created a buzz throughout the wakeboarding community, and professional riders have praised the System 2.0 for its smooth, consistent pull. Industry experts expect the innovation to change the sport, mostly by making it more accessible to people.
One thing is certain: this exciting new System 2.0 will make wakeboarding more accessible and more thrilling for riders in the Midwest this summer. More information on the Nordic Mountain Wake Park can be found on their website at www.nordicmountain.com.

Rookie Clifford Wins Fort Worth Tour Stop!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Fort Worth, Tex. – Fans packed the shores of Texas MasterCraft today for the final rounds of the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour stop in Fort Worth, Tex. Riders in the Pro Men, Women and Jr. Pro Men divisions, threwdown their best runs of the contest to try to win the first Tour stop of the 2009 season.

The one reoccurring theme throughout this weekend’s contest in the Pro Men’s division was upsets created by rookie riders, and today was no different. Harley Clifford of Thornlands, Australia, shocked everyone in Fort Worth today, when the 15-year-old rookie was called to the top of the Pro Men’s podium. Clifford, posting a 94.75 in his final run, beat out Olivier Derome, Aaron Rathy and two-time wakeboard world champion, Andrew Adkison for the top spot.

“I’m just stoked… there are no other words,” said Clifford. “Making it to the Finals was huge for me, but winning my first U.S. Pro Tour stop is just unreal.”

As unreal as it may seem to Clifford, the rookie rider now sits at the top of the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour standings list, making him the top-seeded rider in the next contest.

Incidentally, another rookie rider, England’s Nick Davies, claimed the ROCKSTAR Best Trick Award with his massive Toe-9 off of the U.S. Air Force kicker. The Award is a $1,000 cash prize.

Continuing her success from 2008, England’s Nicola Butler took first-place today in the Pro Women’s division Finals. Butler, 17, who captured the win in Fort Worth last year, faced off in a stacked six-woman Final. Former wakeboard world champ Amber Wing and four-time X Games gold medalist Dallas Friday rounded out the women’s podium, respectively.

The top amateur riders in the Jr. Pro Men’s division hit the water today for their four-man Final. The heat was tight between most of the riders, but Bob Soven (Longwood, Fla.) stood out from the competition to take the first Tour stop win of the season with nearly a 15-point differential from his next closest competitor. Phillip Alsinger, Mitch Langfield and Steel Lafferty rounded the Final, respectively.

The MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour will make its next stop of the season in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., on June 19-21.
