Soven Brothers win in Reno!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Sparks, Nev. – The MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour wrapped-up its fifth and final stop of the 2009 season today in the greater Reno area of Sparks, Nev., where the world’s top pro riders hit the waters of Sparks Marina for the closing-rounds of action.

The Pro Men’s division battled it out on the water today in quarterfinal and semifinal rounds before Danny Harf, Harley Clifford, Rusty Malinoski and Phillip Soven hopped off the dock, respectively, for the four-man final.

Harf and Clifford both had impressive runs in the finals, but Malinoski was quick to answer back by landing a Switch Toeside 1080 – the first 1080 ever landed in a wakeboarding contest – to end their chances of winning. While Malinoski’s 1080 was certainly the highlight of the finals, it wasn’t enough to stop Phillip Soven from claiming the win at Sparks Marina, his second consecutive victory of the season. Malinoski and Clifford rounded out the contest podium, respectively.

Phillip Soven also claimed the ROCKSTAR Best Trick Award for his Backside 720 off of the U.S. Air Force kicker. The Award is a $1,000 cash prize.

Although Harley Clifford didn’t win the final stop of the season, the 15-year-old rookie phenom’s third-place finish today earned him enough points to win the overall Pro Tour title. Clifford now becomes only the second rider ever to win the overall title in his rookie year, behind wakeboarding legend Parks Bonifay, who won it in 1996. Clifford totaled 450 points throughout the five-stop season. Aaron Rathy finished the season in second place with 440 points and Phillip Soven rounded out the top three with 415 points.

In the Jr. Pro Men’s division, Steel Lafferty, Daniel Powers, Bob Soven and Aussie Mitch Langfield battled it out on the water in a four-man final today for the top spot in the contest. All four amateur rippers threw down impressive runs, but top-seed Bob Soven emerged as the winner at Sparks Marina.

With today’s victory, Soven claims his fifth consecutive win of the season, sweeping the five-stop tour to become the first amateur rider ever to sweep the Jr. Pro Men’s division. Bob’s older brother, Phillip Soven, swept the Pro Men’s division during the 2008 Pro Tour.

The Sparks Marina Pro Tour stop also served as the fourth contest in the Queen of Wake series – a five-stop pro circuit for female wakeboarders. All eyes were on top-seed Dallas Friday today in the Pro Women’s division finals, as the current series points-leader was looking to break a four-year losing-streak at Sparks Marina. While the competition in the six-woman final appeared to be tough, Friday edged defending Queen of Wake titlist Nicola Butler 92.00 to 90.50 to take the top spot at Sparks Marina, ending her winless streak in there.

Additional cities on the 2009 MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, included: Fort Worth, Tex., Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Knoxville, Tenn., and Elizabethtown, Ky.

2th European Wakeboard Title for LF Holland Shredder Rocco van Straten!

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Montargil Portugal – The Dutch wakeboarder Rocco van Straten has done it again! For the second time within a week he has won
an European Title in his sport wakeboarding.First in Finland he won the ECWC Title Junior Men Cable Wakeboard. Last weekend he has won
the EAME European Title Wakeboard Boat in Montargil, Portugal.

On itself this is an unique achievement for the Dutch Wakeboarder. Only a handful wakeboarders in Europe compete in both competitions and only
one wakeboarder has done the same trick before Nick Davies by winning both titles after each other in one year.

For Rocco the preparation towards, this title was dramatic. Due to a mistake caused by the airline company. Rocco’s baggage was not on the same plane from Finland to Lissabon and did not arrived in time. Because of that Rocco van Straten could not train in advance and he started untrained for his qualification
last Thursday. Result he fell two times.

In his last chance by LCQ he convinced the jury and was back in the game. During the quarterfinals he showed his skills and went as first in his run through to the finals. As No:1 and best qualified of 6 riders he started last of the dock in the final and Rocked!

Results EAME European Championships Wakeboard Boot ( Junior Men)

No 1: Rocco van Straten (NED)
No 2: Paul Johnston (IRE)

Koch family update!

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Paulie just landed his first two mobes, the wrapped KGB and the Tootsie roll. Well, thanks to his coach and sister Tori, Paulie has now added the Crow Mobe to his arsenal of tricks. Not bad for a 12 year old.

We went to a local INT event this past weekend that the Marsh family held through their Mastercraft dealership. Paulie, Tori and Gabriella all road really well. They all finished on top of their divisions with some awesome riding. This was Paulie’s first time riding in the Outlaw division. Paulie won Outlaw landing both of his two new mobes in his competition pass along with so many other styly moves.

His competitors said, “we knew he would some day beat us all, we just thought he would be a teenager before it happened”.

Next stop Surf Expo, then the Disney TV shoot and then on to the World Championships!

Collingwood, ON — The final day at Wakestock was highlighted by sunny, hot weather and calm water although
an early morning thunderstorm threaten to put a damper on the days festivities. Once the storm
cleared, the day kicked into high gear as the worlds best wakeboarders and wakeskaters took to the water
of Collingwood Harbour to battle out the final rounds of the WWA World Series for an overall prize purse of
$25,000 and the coveted Wakestock belts.

The action got under way in the Malibu Boats Pro Wakeskate Championships with a 6 man semi final. Leading
the way into the final round was past Wakestock wakeskate champs, Stuart Shinn and Brian Grubb. They
were also joined by Wakestock rookies Grant Roberts and local Ontario rider Dan Brown. In the end, it was
Grubb walking away with the win; his 5th Wakestock title overall.

Up next was the Billabong Pro Wakeboard Championship, which saw a 16 man quarterfinal cut down to an 8
man semifinal. Canadians made and strong showing by filling up half of the field with Rusty Malinoski, Aaron
Rathy, Olivier Derome and Raphael Derome all advancing.

The 4 man final was comprised of the hottest riders in the world at the moment: Phillip Soven, the WWA
World Series overall points leader, Aaron Rathy, the King of Wake overall points leader, Harley Clifford, the
PWT overall points leader and Bob Soven, the Jr. Men’s PWT point leader. Buoyed on by the hometown
crowd, Aaron Rathy had 2 flawless passes, which included a Heelside Wrapped Back 7 and a Toeside Backside
Offaxis 5 to take home the Wakestock title.

“This is unreal; I’m super stoked to win Wakestock,” claims Rathy. “Especially considering how good everyone
was riding here. The Wakestock crowd is so big and so close it really makes riding a lot of fun. Rusty
[Malinoski] told me that I’m only the third Canadian ever to win along with him and Jeff Heer so it feels good
to be in that company.”

Wakestock is presented by Monster Energy; in association with Billabong, Malibu Boats, Coors Light, Gordon
Bar Marine, Paris Marine, SBC Skateboard Magazine and SBC Wakeboard Magazine.
