Greaves/McGrath Looking Solid in Prep For Upcoming TORC Series!

Monday, April 26th, 2010

10lo_rd3-1

The team of Johnny Greaves and Jeremy McGrath decided to get in one more test race in preparation for the TORC Series opener in Crandon, WI. So what better way than to put the team to the test, and go race rounds 3 and 4 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Series. Last month, the LOORS Las Vegas opener showed that this Monster Mastercraft Toyota team is a force to be reckoned with, although displaying some bad luck that weekend, they came to Surprise, AZ with the same crazy fast speed and their game faces on!

After putting in the fastest U4 practice times, Greaves found himself starting in the third row with the inversion. With help of his BFGoodrich tires, and Toyota motor, Johnny displayed his usual “Greaves style” as he maneuvered himself around the outside of the pack in turn one, and completed another smooth pass in turn two, finding himself already looking at the back of the leader. On the 2nd lap, Johnny made a quick switchback pass, for the lead. Hungry for a win, he continued to charge hard, as he laid the next 4 fastest laps, and had a 12second lead by the mandatory yellow, only to find out what he had suspected was true, he had a rear tire going low. The decision was made not to pit, and Johnny continued to lead for 2 more laps, until the tire finally blew forcing him to the pits for a quick change.

McGrath losing no speed from the previous rounds 1 and 2, proved once again to be one of the fastest on the track. Qualifying second, put him on the pole, along side Carl Renezeder. The two drivers put on an awesome display of “cat-n-mouse” right to the finish, with Jeremy putting on several charges to get pass Carl, but unfortunately couldn’t make any of them stick. Jeremy and his new Monster Mastercraft Toyota U2 are showing incredible speed, and have definitely got the attention of all the other drivers, including Rob MacCachren, multiple champion, who fought to get past him, but to no avail!

Optimism was high in the pits for Sunday’s race! The team felt confident the Toyota Tundra’s were going to be strong, both Jeremy and Johnny qualified 2nd, however, the inversion put them both starting in the third row.

U-4 was all but exciting, and kind of short lived for Johnny. He had worked his way up to 3rd position, behind Carl Renezeder, and was waiting for the door to open to make a clean pass. Rick Huseman, running 4th, was trying to work Johnny at the same time. Contact was made as Rick tried to get on the inside of Johnny. As the front wheel was turned and in motion, this contact caused the seal to get knocked out of the power steering, which eventually lost all steering fluid. Johnny after a few laps was forced to pull over.

U-2 on the other hand, was full of excitement, almost too much to recap in a race report. There were multiple accidents and a lot of carnage throughout the entire race. Jeremy got turned around backwards on the face of a jump, from some rear contact, already on turn 3. Starting from 18th, Jeremy and his Monster Energy Toyota made some serious headway, working his way all the way up to 5th position, closely behind the lead pack. Things were looking good, with plenty time to still make it to a podium finish. Finding an opportunity, Jeremy tried to make a pass for 4th place, only to get a severe hit in the rear from another competitor, spinning him completely around, and then driving completely up over the front end of the Mastercraft Toyota, and putting it out of commission for the day.

Lastly, we all knew the day would come, where Johnny’s son would take the field. CJ Greaves, at the young age of 15, ran his Traxxas SuperBuggy at the LOORS Las Vegas opener only to run in the lead the entire race until the last lap, his very first time in short-course. At that time we knew we had a racer here! CJ brought his same upbeat, fun, and of course a very fast truck to the track here in Surprise—this time in a SuperLite.

Given a great opportunity by Speed Technologies, CJ was out to show the fans what these small trucks are made of. Saturday CJ started in pole position. He let a few guys get him in the first few corners after the start, but not for long. As a small battle happened in front of him, CJ took advantage of the moment and passed the pack for the lead. For the next 5 laps CJ held off the pack, and made it look like he was going to take his first race in checkered style! Two corners before the checkered flag, CJ went in tight to protect his line, and hit an unexpected rut, flipping him over, and giving over the lead. He crossed the finish in 7th position.

Almost identical to Saturday’s race, CJ again started in the pole position, this time getting the lead early, and maintaining it for the entire race. Two laps from the finish, expecting the white flag to come out, nerves created CJ to be very conservative on his last lap, not wanting to roll again, but inadvertently left the door open and let Chad George pass him making CJ have to settle for 2nd! All in all, I would say he’s definitely a “chip off the old block!”

At the end of the weekend, the team felt that they are ready for the TORC Series to begin. The trucks are very competitive and the drivers are stoked for the battle in the Midwest!

Things to Watch at Wake Games via Wakeboardingmag.com

Monday, April 26th, 2010

More than 200 wake athletes from around the world will take to the waters of the Orlando Watersports Complex in Orlando, Florida, April 29-May 2 to compete in the most unique event in wakeboarding — the Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by ROCKSTAR. This four-day event groups amateur wake athletes with the top professional riders in the sport for a one-of-a-kind team challenge.

Ten preselected captains will host a live draft to field a team with a mix of male and female, pro and amateur riders. Each rider will compete in their respective division, which is separated by age and skill-level, while contributing points toward a team score based on their individual placement in that division. Every division will crown a winner, and the team with the highest total score will take home the team title.

With so much talent at such a diverse contest, we’ve picked the 10 riders who could make the biggest impact for their team at the 2010 Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by ROCKSTAR.
Five-Peat?

Brian Grubb is one of the most dominant competition wakeskaters in the biz and that goes quadruple for the Air Nautique Wake Games. That’s right, Grubby is a four-time Wake Games winner and has gone undefeated in the Pro Wakeskate division every year since the event’s inception in 2006. Look for the New Hampshire native to keep his streak alive with a win at this year’s Games.

Man of Steel Vs. Super Powers

This year’s Jr. Pro Men division is chock-full of talent and stylie goodness, with Steel Lafferty and Daniel Powers leading the gifted group of up-and-coming rippers. Both riders podiumed multiple times throughout the 2009 season and are poised to have a stellar year in 2010.

Meagan An Impression

In the world of women’s pro wakeboarding, Dallas Friday and Nicola Butler are the heavy hitters of their sport. Everyone knows that Amber Wing and Raimi Merritt can seriously rip, and Melissa Marquardt and Hayley Smith bring a style all of their own. But few know the youngest and most potential-filled rider in the sport, Meagan Ethell. At 13 years old, this budding superstar enters her second pro season with tons of promise and a serious hunger to win.

The X Factor

This year’s biggest X factor at the 2010 Air Nautique Wake Games has to be Danny Harf. The four-time X Games gold medalist is one of the sport’s most innovative and explosive riders. But a string of unfortunate injuries have kept Harf from ever competing at the Air Nautique Wake Games. As a result, no one knows what D Block will bring to a contest so early in the season. But as the sixth seed, a healthy Harf is positioned to go far in his Wake Games debut.

Taylor Made For Riding

At 11 years old, Taylor McCullough has already built an impressive resume for herself. In the past two years, Taylor has won multiple national and world titles, as well as the 2009 Air Nautique Wake Games in the Girls division. Taylor enters this year’s Games as the top seed and looks to defend her title against a tough field of competitors.

What About Bob?

In the aftermath of Harley Clifford’s astonishing rookie season, many people have set their expectations high for wakeboarding’s newest rookie rider, Bob Soven. After sweeping the Jr. Pro Tour and winning the national title in the Jr. Pro Men division, Ballin’ Bob is expected to set the bar even higher for rookie pro riders and enters the Air Nautique Wake Games coming off of his first pro win at Board Up Miami.

He may be 46 years old, but Matt Vermillion rides like an experienced young gun. The Ohio native is a four-time world champ and a two-time Air Nautique Wake Games winner. With that kind of wake resume, there’s no doubt that Matt “Vermillionaire” has a solid shot at defending his Wake Games title against a very talented Veterans division.

Going Farr

The first female to land a wake-to-wake shove is set to defend her title at this year’s Games. That’s right boys and girls, Jen GilanFarr, the two-time world champion, will look to win her second straight title in the Pro Women’s Wakeskate division at this year’s Air Nautique Wake Games.

Noah-It-All

There’s no doubt that the talented rippers in the Boys division are the future of wakeboarding. Each of these riders has a solid shot at winning, but Florida’s Noah Flegel is the defending Air Nautique Wake Games winner. As the top seed, he’s expected to retain his title against this talented group of groms.

King of Wake Opens 2010 Season with Air Nautique Wake Games

Monday, April 26th, 2010

wg10_logo

Orlando, Fla. – The King of Wake – the world’s elite pro wakeboarding series – will open its 2010 season, on Apr. 29-May 2, in Orlando with the Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by ROCKSTAR. The season-opening event, held at the Orlando Watersports Complex, is the first of eight stops throughout the United States in the season-long points chase to see who rules the wake. Over the course of the season, athletes accumulate points at each stop, with the highest total points-earner taking home the most prestigious crown in wakeboarding.

“Orlando is going to be epic because it’s our first stop and everyone wants to start the season off with a win,” said defending King of Wake, Aaron Rathy. “Everyone is looking to go big at the Wake Games and we’re all stoked to get the season started.”

The Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by ROCKSTAR is a four-day-long pro-am contest, which groups wakeboarding’s top pro athletes with local amateur riders for a team challenge.

Ten preselected captains will host a live draft to field a team with a mix of male and female, pro and amateur riders. The amateur riders will be separated into their own division, but contribute points toward a team score based on their individual placement in that division. The pros will also contribute points to their team’s score based on their individual placement in the pro division. The results from the pro division will also reflect the points awarded toward the series standings.

Throughout the event, the pros will compete in heats through a series of rounds, including qualifiers, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, by performing rail tricks and aerial stunts, while being pulled on the water by the event’s exclusive towboat, the Super Air Nautique 230, at a speed of approximately 25pmh. Tricks are scored by a panel of judges, with only the top-scoring athletes advancing in each round of the contest until a winner is determined in the finals.

Last year, Canada’s Rusty Malinoski finished in first place at the 2009 Wake Games and helped his squad win the team challenge. Malinoski will look to repeat at this year’s event and take the lead in the series standings, but faces a tough field of competitors, including the defending King of Wake, Aaron Rathy; 2009 Pro Tour winner, Harley Clifford; four-time X Games gold medalist, Danny Harf; and rookie phenom, Bob Soven.

In addition to all the action on the water; on land, fans will experience great food and music, athlete autograph signings, chances to win freebies, and shopping at the most cutting-edge stores offering water-sports equipment including boats, wakeboards, wakeskates, sunglasses and the latest in wakeboarding and surfing fashions.

Tickets are available online and at the event: $10.00 (general); $5.00 (ages 6-12); Free (ages 5 & under).

Wake Nation Cincinnati To Set A New Guinness World Record™ June 25 & 26!

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Celebrate With A Weekend Of Fun & Activities!

(Cincinnati, OH) – They’re going to be making history this summer at Wake Nation Cincinnati in Fairfield…Guinness style!

A Wake Nation Cincinnati team of wakeboarders will be setting a new world record for most distance traveled on a wakeboard within 24 hours…and it’s all for a good cause!

The 24-hour world record attempt will begin Friday, June 25, and end on Saturday, June 26, and is officially sanctioned by Guinness World Records™, the ultimate authority on record-breaking achievement.

The public is invited to join in the fun, including riding on the lake with the wakeboarding record-setters, photo and autograph sessions, wakeboarding clinics, and more. Additional details will be released closer to the record-setting event.

Pledged proceeds from the world-record attempt will be donated to MedLend, a non-profit organization that provides medical missions to impoverished countries around the globe in an attempt to save and improve the lives of their citizens.

The award-winning Wake Nation Cincinnati opens for its second season May 1 and will operate daily through October. Opening hours vary between 10 a.m. and noon, depending on the month. Closing time is 8 p.m. (Check website for details.)

Located on Joe Nuxhall Way in Fairfield’s Joyce Park, the Wake Nation Cincinnati watersports’ complex opened to rave reviews one year ago as Ohio’s only watersports’ park where riders can wakeboard, water ski, kneeboard, and wakeskate around a 10-acre lake WITHOUT A BOAT. Riders are pulled around the oval lake at speeds of 18-20 miles per hour by a circulating, overhead cable system that runs 35 feet above the water. During its first season of operation, Wake Nation Cincinnati received numerous awards, including prestigious “Best Of” awards from Ohio Magazine, Cincinnati Magazine and Cincy Magazine.

New for 2010 is a smaller, second lake called “The Practice Pond” that features an “easy start” ride system, the first of its kind in the U.S. The Practice Pond is designed to give children ages five and up and beginners of all ages a place to learn to ride a wakeboard at a slower speed than on the main lake. The Practice Pond will have a starting dock on each end of the pond, creating an easy “up and back” system to facilitate more “launch” repetitions and generate a faster learning curve.

At Wake Nation Cincinnati, both parking and admission are FREE. The park is a “pay as you play” facility with ride time starting at $25 for two hours. Rental equipment, private lessons, group discounts and parties are available. Season Passes are now on sale for $550.
