Grant Roberts Takes 2nd Overall at Toe Jam!!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Orlando, Fla. — Pro wakeskating climbed to another level on Saturday, September 11, as the world’s top pro wakeskaters competed for the sport’s most coveted title at the 7th Annual Byerly Toe Jam.

The prestige of the event was even higher this year, with a huge crowd and Livestream webcast on O’Neill’s Facebook page. Riders were also competing for the highest purse in the history of wakeskating at over $20,000. Contour Cameras stepped up this year, awarding each winner with a hands-free HD video camera and waterproof housing.

The field was narrowed down a week previous to the event, and the Toe Jam always showcases every aspect of wakeskating. Eight riders qualified for the boat portion, eight for cable, twelve for PWC and twenty for the winch pool jam on Saturday night. This year, the Toe Jam provided a more festival-type atmosphere with an all-day schedule, free Rockstar energy drink, Chipolte catering and a banging live performance by Swamburger and DiViNCi that you can check out at solilla.com.

“It took a lot of work to get everything together,” Scott Byerly said. “But it all came together and everybody ripped. It’s always cool to see how far the sport gets pushed each year.”

The biggest honor in wakeskating is to win the overall title, for the most points accumulated in all divisions. Reed Hansen and Grant Roberts were the only two that had qualified in all three categories. It was a constant battle as they moved all around the different sections of OWC throughout the day. Emad also offered up an electric skateboard for the overall winner in adition to the $5000 at stake.

The day at OWC started out behind the Byerly’s Signature edition Nautique, with a surprising start. Reed Hansen was knocked out during the first round by Stu Shinn. Stu has been able to put it together behind the boat all year, and this time it was good enough to take the previous year’s winner out of the game. As the riders dwindled down it wound up with two roommates in the final. Brandon Thomas and Brian Grubb rode against each other for the boat title in a really close heat, but Grubb came out victorious and was the first winner of the day. Grant Roberts made it through the first round in the boat event, and had a lead over Reed Hansen going into the Cable event.

The cable event had a few upsets as well. French rider Leo Labadens, and Bret Little got knocked out in the early rounds leaving the final between Rockstar team rider Nick Taylor against Reed Hansen. Hansen rode super well, but Nick threw down some super tech moves in the flats including regular and switch kickflips, and a switch frontside flip. Reed would finish in 2nd place, and Grant Roberts tied for 3rd. This left Grant in the overall title lead by just one placement going into the final event on the rails.

The Sea Doo pulled the event on the rails with 12 riders total. The first two rounds were head-to-head, then it went to a 3 man final. After the first round had gone down the two top riders in the overall title race met up in a head to head heat. Grant Roberts and Reed Hansen both went out and rode super well, but Reed edged out Grant by a pretty good margin. This left the overall race completely up to Reed Hansen. He went into the three man final having to get second or better to edge out Roberts for the overall Byerly Toe Jam win. Last off the dock, Reed was able to watch Yan Lecomte and Andrew Pastura and know exactly what he had to do to win. Reed had the eye of the tiger and went out and won the rail portion of the event. taking the overall Byerly Toe Jam title.

For the Nike 6.o winch jam under the lights pulled by the crew at Ridiculous Winches, Yan Lecombe back lipped the hubba ledge on his last pull to seal up the first place spot. Dieter Humpsch came in 2nd place with a front lip, and Andrew Pastura in 3rd with a frontside 180 over the rail

Kevin Henshaw Wins Wake Wars at The B.O.B.!!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Wake Wars at The B.O.B . was a success again! The B.O.B. is already thinking about next year and I plan to try and lock down a date yet this fall. Last year we had an amazing crowd despite the cold weather and this year was no different with temperatures around 90 degrees both days! A local pool company was able to again bring in a 30 ft round swimming pool which kept the visitors cooled off throughout both days of hot weather.

The layout was changed slightly allowing the vendors more space for the visitors to walk through which seemed to work better than last year where the crowds just filled into the tents to watch the wakeboarding competition.

There is talk of trying to return in July for 2011 as a possible last Wake Wars before new construction begins on the parking lot area next fall.

Wake Wars came to an end with Kevin Henshaw on top with $2,000. Nate Perry in second with $800. Derek Grasman took third with $400.

Old Greenwich’s Koch wins wakeboarding world championship!

There was already little room for awards on Paulie Koch’s mantle. The 13-year-old Old Greenwich native has been collecting honors and accolades from the wakeboarding community since he began competing at the age of 5.

However, Koch will have no trouble finding space for his latest trophy — the World Wakeboarding Association World Championship.
“It hit me right away,” Koch said of the realization he’d been crowned the world’s best. “It was an unbelievable feeling right out of the gates. It’s an unbelievable feeling being champion of the world.”

Koch had already caught the eye of the wakeboarding world, being touted as a future pro in a video on the Wakeboarding Magazine website last month. Winning worlds has only furthered that notion according to Wakeboarding Magazine editor Kevin Michael.

“Paulie’s skills on the water are obvious, but his personality and good instincts are going to be what helps him become a top pro,” Michael said.

Koch took first place in the boys division, beating his closest competitor by 10 points with a score of 66.67, in the 17th annual Rockstar WWA Wakeboarding World Championships, last month at Orlando Watersports Complex in Florida.

Most of Koch’s competition came from athletes hailing from warm weather climates such as Florida and Australia, making his ascent to the top all the more impressive.
“It’s very difficult for anybody from the north to compete against riders who are on the water year round. Much less become a world champion,” Michael said.

While Koch was able to put some distance between him and his competition according to the judges’ scores, it took a premium effort for him to rise above the other riders at the height of their game.

“I went out and did the best I could and I came out on top,” said Koch, later adding, “Everybody excelled. We’re all excelling in the last couple years.”
Koch overcame a pair of falls in his opening run to make the six-man final.

“I was a little discouraged, but that didn’t really knock me down,” Koch said.

In the final, Koch excelled, landing pro-style tricks such as a handle pass KGB and a tootsie roll. He also landed 540 spins from both the heal and toe sides and ended his run with a massive 360-spin for his mandatory double-up trick.

Making his finals’ run all the more impressive, Koch had a few mental hurdles to overcome. Nearly two months before the competition, Koch broke his nose attempting a Crow Mobe, a flip that involves an inverted spin and requires the rider to pass the handle behind his back while upside down. Six days before the world championships, Koch was diagnosed with a concussion after a few big crashes during practice.

The injuries forced Koch to reel in his practices and allowed him to focus on simpler tricks. The reduced workload helped him clean up his runs, and his ability to block the memory of his falls propelled Koch to a world title.

“We definitely made the right choice in how hard to push me and how hard to push myself,” Koch said.

“Even the tricks that gave me the concussion, I landed them. It was a huge mental thing for me to overcome.”

Koch, who is entering his freshman year at Greenwich High School, is practicing for one more national competition before the season winds down and his focus turns to snowboarding.

A win at this tournament could mean a berth onto Team USA for the World Cup in Italy next year.

Tori Koch, Paulie’s sister, fresh off claiming the National title last month in Reno, Nev., finished fifth in Junior Women’s division at worlds.
