Catching up with Amber Wing…

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Riding at the top of her game, Amber Wing had a great 2010, including a cover on TransWorld Wakeboarding and being named the Best Women’s Rider at the annual Wake Awards. Chilling at home in Australia, Amber takes some questions…

Hot off a 2010 season, can we expect a repeat win at the Wake Awards in 2011?

I hope so. I will be riding my hardest and pushing as much as I can. I know the other girls are hungry for it as well so I am sure they are going to be giving it their best as well.

Are you gunning for another cover?
I am always thinking of cover shots and it would be awesome to score another cover this year. It is just the case of getting the money shot.

Are you working on new tricks?
Right now I am not working on any new tricks, enjoying my off season in Australia, just riding and having fun, making sure I don’t burn myself out.

What are your 2011 goals?
Stay healthy, keep riding strong, and film and do photo shoots as much as possible.

In your opinion, who is the next up and comer in women’s wakeboarding that will make an impact in the sport?
Such a hard question to answer. There are a few that come to mind that have the talent however it is hard to see if they have the determination and right attitude to be the best and a successful athlete. It will be interesting to watch the careers of Megan Ethall and Taylor McCullough. These girls are 14 and 12, definitely show a passion for wakeboarding and have family support.

If you could land any dream sponsor outside the wake industry, who would it be and why?
Audi. To be given a brand new car would be awesome, and I love Audis. The Q7 is awesome and can tow boats easy!

Who is your biggest threat on tour and why?
Nicola Butler for sure, we are friends and ride together most days, however on tour we are battling for 1st and throughout the year juggled first and 2nd between us.

We have a great friendship and push each other on a daily basis which is great for our wakeboarding and Womens Wakeboarding.

Friday, January 28th, 2011

It’s become an amazing annual tradition that takes place at what many call the best watersports complex in the world down in the Philippines. The location is Camsur Watersports Complex and the event is the Ultimate Wake Championships.

The event is so named because it combines behind the boat performances with cable divisions, winch park events and obstacle-only cable runs. The goal is to determine the best all-around wakeboarder and wakeskater.

This year, the coveted title belongs to Tom Fooshee! Tom was able to hold off the young gun Daniel Grant, who managed to beat Tom in the Pro Men Cable event, by taking the Obstacle-Only event and making it to the finals in the boat event.

LF Teamrider Rocco van Straten wins Snowboarding’s LG Snowboard FIS World Cup!!

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Rocco van Straten has caused a totally unexpected surprise at the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup host debut of Denver, Colorado. The Dutch rider secured the first ever win for his home country in the big air discipline thus claiming his chapter in the World Cup history books. With a total score of 53.0 points the 19-years-old kid edged off 2011 World Championships runner-up and Big Air Word Cup novice Zachary Stone of Canada (50.8) to the second rank. Michael Macho (AUT, 48.5) rounded out the podium as third thus securing his career’s best result so far.

After this historical triumph, Rocco van Straten, a Junior World Champion in both, lift and cable wakeboarding, was absolutely astonished. “I’m super happy. To be honest, I don’t know what to say. But one thing is for sure: this is the best moment in my whole life so far.”

However, the victory in the first big air competition on US-American soil after seven years (Mt. Bachelor, OR, 2004) wasn’t his first trick in the last weeks. Van Straten had also surprised at the last World Championships in Spain by placing fourth. “That definitely gave me a push although I had to fight the jetlag today. And then I end up first. I didn’t expect anything like this, but I was hoping for a top-5 result.”

The Dutchman sat in fifth after the first two jumps (of which the better one counts) having earned 25.1 points for his cab 900. In the decisive third run, he stomped a huge backside 1080 thus logging in another 27.9 points and also raising the bar for the four guys still to come. None of them had something in store to set against except of Michael Macho, who was the only one landing his trick in the sweet spot.

However, the leading man after the first two rounds only threw in a safety jump scoring 20.7 points for his backside 720 thus wrapping up the contest as third. Nevertheless, “Much” was pretty OK with the result. “I didn’t expect anything as I was lying in bed deathly ill with fever and also just survived the qualifiers by the skin of one’s teeth. Hiking up to the start was the worst today. So, I’m pretty happy.”

Big Air World Cup novice Zachary Stone was also pleased with the final ranking. Canada’s talent, who had impressed with backside 1260 and backside 1080 double cork, said right after the finals: “I’m super stoked and don’t really know what to say. I’m happy that I stayed on my feet.”

Due to the nice result at his first ever Big Air World Cup contest the 19-years-old WCS silver medallist added: “It’s nothing scheduled yet but I’m hoping that I’m able to compete at the season’s last big air in Quebec.”
