Scott Stewart 2010 Global Rider Winner Interview!
Thursday, January 13th, 2011The 2010 Global Rider Search winner Scott Stewart weighs in on some questions I had for him recently. Scott blew up in 2010, blowing away internet viewers with just 1 video that made people rethink the progression of wakeboarding. When most people think Winching and Rails are the future, Scott is working hard to keep pushing it behind the boat with his unique style. Going to be seeing a lot more from Scott in 2011
Scott Stewart, You’ve captured the attention of the wake board industry this past fall, Winning the Global Rider Search. Whats it been like dealing with all the groupies and paparazzi? Can you even get calm water to ride on anymore?
Scott: It has been such a blessing for me to be selected for the Global Rider, and a long time coming! I am very grateful for this opprotunity and I am going to keep working as hard as I have been on and off the water to take advantage of the opprotunities. Haha, ya there are always groupies around but I have been focusing strictly on my riding and what I’m here to do. I stay low key and away from the groupies, I let the krew handle that. Its the same as riding and everything else I do, Quality over Quantity! I’m pretty picky when it comes to ladies, and for now its to much drama that was happening, so it’s all about my riding! I just moved again, and it’s mid winter and it has actually been kinda hard to get good conditions. Everytime we head out to ride all these people come out of the wood work doing hot laps around us? Craziness! But it makes you consistant in any conditions, but not ideal when your trying to throw big and hard as you can, which is my fav!
Your style could be compared to Randall Harris and Keith Lyman combined together. Have you drawn inspiration from those guys in the past?
Scott: Wow!?! That is a huge compliment! Ya, in the begining they both inspired me to wakeboard. I grew up snowboarding, so that big lofty style is where it’s at for me. I feel that they are 2 of the best to ever do it! I see it as it is not what you do, it’s how you do it! But ya kno, it’s to each’s own. I just want to go big and float as long as I can doing the tricks that I see in my head. And seeing them ride, that is wakeboarding to me! I want to ride the boat, and wakeboard!
I know your quite the health buff, What motivates you to train and eat healthy? When most guys are out partying and sleeping all day.
Scott: I definately am! I was out off and on for over 4 years with an injury, and the training and eating right is what brought me back. Through yoga, eating, strength training, and massage brought me back, when Doctors told me to quit riding. That was never an option in my mind, I have to ride! When everyone bails on you, you frustrated, or at the end of your rope, I strap on my board and express myself on my board and all that disappears and I remeber how great it is to be alive! So it’s not a joke to me, to be able to ride agan. Yes it is all about fun, but I want to improve myself to do the stuff that I know I will do on my board, and for me, Partying and sleeping all day is not productive for where I am gonna be. I am knocking anyones lifestyle chioces, to each’s own, it’s just what I feel and works for me.
Whats it been like working with Liquid Force and Ambush?
Scott: It has been exactly what you would think, perfect! Those guys are the best Companies with the best products out there along with the best staff! I couldn’t ask for more! Chuck Morrow from Buywake is such a genuine guy, I feel that I clicked with him right away, and he is taking care of me tremensly! Everyone at Liquid Force is quality guys. Jimmy Redmond, Don Wallace, Aaron grace, Patrick Cerne, Colin, all the guys are on point! Never leave me hangin! Also Matt Long who is also my Reef man, whos got me set up with Reef as well, whick is legit! So blessed to have the faith and full support of these guys, who are becoming my fam!
Your last video for your Global Rider Search submission, got a ton of views across the internet. Can we expect a new video from you soon? Maybe I should come shoot one?
Scott: Jen Gilanfar did such a great job with it! I give her most of the credit for that! She sacraficed her time, and riding time to help me out and film me. She is the one who told me about the contest, I had no idea, so Jen is really my angel who helped me get noticed a little more. Thanks Jen! Yes there is a new video in the works, and it will be shot with Jen again. We are going over the details now and begining the shooting in February, which I am very pumped to work with her again. ince that last one was a couple of sets, this will be the same, but all the bigger stuff, that wasn’t in the last one. And yes Patrick, you should def come out and shoot one! I am ready to do work, hit me up!
Who do you ride with the most these days?
Scott: I am riding all over the place, and riding with anyone who really loves to ride and has that great vibe to get down to!
Where do you go from here? Where do you see yourself in 2 years from now?
Scott: Just keep diong what I’m doing. I have some major stuff thats in the works as of now, that will be great! I may have some outside industry opprotunities involving riding that will be very fun, so I’m open for any offer or opprotunity anyone wants to add or put out there. Where do I see myself in 2 years? I don’t usually look into the future, because life changes on a day to day basis, but I see myself riding, and doing my tricks that I have imprinted in my mind, and being universal in other markets, being free to do anything I want.
Any tips to Riders out there trying to make it into the Pro Ranks?
Scott: Just keep riding, and remeber why you ride or started. Which is for the love of it! Keep that in your heart and have fun and enjoy learning tricks. It will get hard as everything does, you will get overlooked, underscored, unpublished for a bit, but you have to pay your dues like an anything. So if you really want it, don’t listen to the haters and doubters, that is there job to hate, be yourslef and keep ripping, and remebering that it is the fun and love of the riding that you share with everyone, and thats why you do it. Everything else will fall into place.
Any big plans for this summer? Do you plan to compete on the Pro Tour?
Scott: I want to have at least 5 of my new tricks out there so I can start on the others. It is never ending progression. I might compete this year, we will see. I will have to weigh the importance of going to events or riding for a month of free riding and progressing. Cause it is one or the other, contest for one weekend, or freeride for a month? We will see what happens, I would love too!
