Boarder Pass Triple Crown Cable Wake Tour This Saturday!

PORT COLBORNE – Wakeboarders and wakeskaters from across Ontario will take to the waters of Sugarloaf Harbour Marina this Saturday to compete in the Boarder Pass Triple Crown Cable Wake Tour.

“The best riders are coming here, including Braden Loi who was Canadian wakeskater of the year and finished fourth in the world championships (in 2012),” said Chris Smith, co-owner of Boarder Pass Niagara, Sarnia and Hamilton

Smith said the tour, which is sanctioned by Water Ski Wakeboard Ontario, replaces last year’s WAKE-Up Call and will see riders in a points race to be declared overall Boarder Pass champion for 2013.

“The first event in the series is being held here and then we go to Hamilton and wrap up in Sarnia.”

Saturday’s competition kicks off around 9 a.m. with practice taking place, followed by competitors in amateur, intermediate, men’s open advanced, women’s open category for wakeboards and an advanced category for wakeskate competitors.

Wakeboarders are strapped to their boards, while wakeskaters stand on their boards and ride them much like a skateboard. They all have rails and ramps on which they can perform tricks as they compete for points.

Smith knows of three amateur riders coming down from Sarnia to compete as well as Port Colborne’s Mitch MacLean, who just started riding last year.

In the women’s division, Smith expected Wainfleet’s Amanda Newhouse, who also works for Boarder Pass, to compete.

He’s hoping more women, and more competitors in general, come out and take part in the event.

With the growth in cable-operated parks, more people are exposed to the sport and taking part in it.

As for the competition on Saturday, he said those watching from shore, the docks, or Don Cherry’s, will be in be in for a treat.

“We’re going to have a Big Air Contest at the end of the competition. It should be entertaining,” said Smith. Competitors will be awarded points for getting the biggest air and sticking their landing.

In addition to Boarder Pass’s tour, the 2013 Roots Wake Series will make a stop in Port Colborne. The Boarder Pass Open, presented by Endless Surf, takes place Saturday, July 13.
